Jet-lag and shift work: (2). Therapeutic use of melatonin.
نویسنده
چکیده
The preceding article1 has laid the foundations for understanding the difficulties of jet-lag and shiftworker's malaise and for appreciating the various countermeasures other than chronobiotics (drugs that alter rhythms). Several approaches have met with some success. One of the major difficulties in this area is the uncontrollable nature of field studies on jet-lag and our inability to simulate timezone change in the laboratory in a way that takes account of all the factors that may arise in the field.

Clinical applications of melatonin in circadian disorders
Chronobiological disorders and syndromes include seasonal affective disorder (SAD), total blindness, advanced and delayed sleep phase syndrome, jet lag, and shift work maladaptation. These disorders are treated by adjusting circadian phase, using appropriately timed bright light exposure and melatonin administration (at doses of 0.5 mg or less). In some cases, it may be necessary to measure int...
متن کاملUse of melatonin in circadian rhythm disorders and following phase shifts.
Following abrupt phase shifts (real or simulated time zone changes, night shift work) there is desynchronisation between the internal circadian rhythms (including melatonin) and the external environment with consequent disturbances in sleep, mood and performance. In humans the pineal hormone melatonin has phase-shifting and resynchronising properties with regard to a number of circadian rhythms...
متن کاملTherapeutic applications of melatonin.
Melatonin is a methoxyindole synthesized within the pineal gland. The hormone is secreted during the night and appears to play multiple roles within the human organism. The hormone contributes to the regulation of biological rhythms, may induce sleep, has strong antioxidant action and appears to contribute to the protection of the organism from carcinogenesis and neurodegenerative disorders. At...
متن کاملCircadian rhythm desynchronosis, jet lag, shift lag, and coping strategies.
Jet lag and shift lag have similar physiological consequences, but shift lag is a more complex problem. The most severe desynchronization may be experienced by airline personnel making transmeridian flights. Coping strategies for eastward and westward travelers and for shiftworkers are recommended, as are interventions involving melatonin.
متن کاملP-169: Melatonin and Fertility
Background: Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain. It helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body’s daily rhythm, telling us when to fall asleep and when to wake up. Ever since we developed electricity and the lightbulb, we have been decreasing our body’s secretions of melatonin by being exposed to bright light after it is dark. Jet lag, shift work and poor v...
